I think you are talking about the Quad range transmission Charlie. It 
was introduced on the new generation
30 series in 1973 I believe. I've never heard anything bad about a John 
Deere transmission. Their power shift
  was years ahead of the competition and stood up well. Those 4020 
tractors now sell used for more than the
  new price over 40 years ago.
