I Just don't remember what model JD it was.  I do know it was turbocharged
and it had what I thought was a hydro transmission.  It was some sort of
shift on the fly power shift between hi and low range.  It worked similar to
an AC Power Director but was much more complex and prone to problems.
I don't remember any more about the transmission.  Could be it was a regular
gear box with only the power shift high and low range.  I liked it a lot 
because
when you were doing tillage work you could pull it back into low to turn 
around
and get the implement back in the ground.  Then when it was pulling again
you could go into high.  However, they had a lot of problems with it and 
spent a
lot of money on repairs to the transmission.  I don't know why exactly.

    4320 had a turbo, but no hydrostatic transmissions in this era. 4320 was
John Deere's answer to the M&W turbo installations Was modified to run
cooler with oil spray to bottom of pistons.

Not a 4020, at least not stock. They didn't come with a turbo. Our 4430 did
however.

John,  I didn't say earlier because my memory is foggy on it but
I'm pretty sure it was a 4020 I was running that really bothered
my ears.  I know it was in the 4000 series and one of the smaller
of the series.

The older I get the more tractors bother my hearing. A day running the 4020
and my ears ring for a couple hours afterwards. What is really bothering is
my 3300 combine I've had for about 3 years now. The engine is right beside
the cab with zero insulation. Makes it hot and loud. By contrast my old 55
had the engine behind the bin, huge difference in noise level. I really
should get some ear plugs.

Yes, hydro drive is noisy on some machines. Swathers in particular.
Combines too. Can't say
I have ever noticed turbo noise but the Magnum tractor has a pretty good
cab plus my foam
ear plugs. On the IH combine the engine is way at the back behind the
hopper so I hardly know the
engine is running most of the time I'm combining. I still wear the ear
plugs as I feel that long hours
of even low noise can be damaging to the hearing.
