[AT] Now cellars

In the Midwest underground fruit cellars were partially buried in a slope
open to the east and were normally referred to as underground fruit cellars.
I have only seen a couple being built/or new in the past several decades.
An antique track friend living in a tornado prone part of Alabama built a
new home approx ten years ago; the short hallway is eight feet wide and the
last twelve feet is a tornado proof room with computer and has wheelchair
access.

Yes, sawdust or straw was used to insulate the snow/ice that was put in
the ice house in winter. We used to have a nice little log ice house
here when I was a kid .. Long gone now but I have dreams of building a
replica of it some day..
