Hi Dean
You were lucky meet a helpful stranger to get the old M fired up. I 
guess you could have just hooked the cables up to the starter from the 
vehicle to save opening up your battery case.
I think it is just coming up to 43 years ago I had a long road trip on a 
DC4 Case that a neighbour had bought at a farm sale and needed it driven 
home. It was a day much like today, warm and sunny with the odd snowbank 
lingering in the bushes. . I don't recall getting cold in what must have 
been at least a 35 mile drive. Seems to me it took all afternoon. I saw 
some new country that day. Got home with a splitting headache and wind 
burn from the spring wind in my face.
