Dick,
  I bought an LS R3039 (older version of the XR3037 basically) last January
and I see a similar thing with mine.  It seems that LS didnt engineer as
much strength in the roll back function as most customers would like.

I would suggest he switch to forks that go on in place of the bucket.  I
have a set for mine and they do pretty well for me.

I have used the method suggested as well about setting down and rolling
back at the same time (when moving hay bales) and this does work pretty
well.

All in all its one of very few 'oddities' about the LS that bothers me.
 Strangely my biggest complaint about the entire tractor is that the seat
doesnt flip up!  It made me have to find a place to keep it inside - so I
guess it snot a bad thing!
