Sounds good to do the rods out of the block. 



Also, do the crank in the block with out the rods on. There are videos of this on line. You should be able to turn the crank very easily by hand if you do it right. 



Allischalmers.com forum has a lot of good information on the rebuilds. 



Not a paint expert,  primer is what I usually use before the final coat .

I got my block back from the engine shop. It is clean but now  has surface 
rust on it. I want to paint it with some allis orange from tractor  supply. 
what kind of surface prep is good for keeping the paint on it? Also   
thinking about shimming all the rod caps with the crank out of the block. Cuz I   
don't like the idea of checking drag with all the pistons insalled. Any   
thoughts?
