Greg,

I can e-mail you photos of the two pages in my L manual which I took
tonight for timing the magnito if you wish. The offers from Dean and John
might work better for you. Let me know if you need what I have. I will
gladly send it.

Upper wire (nearest to block) on mag goes to #1 (front) cylinder.
Lower wire (outside) to #2 cylinder.

Verifying good spark from mag and a good sharp snap from the impulse should
come first as long as the mag will need to be retimed anyway, but I am sure
you already know that.

Good luck. They are a fun little engine. My brother bought a power unit
with the Hercules a while back. Like yours it had a hung valve. What he
found eventually is that someone had tried to force it over and bent the
valve stem. After a lot of doing, he got the stem out through the guide.
I think he saved the guide, but had to replace the valve. He has it
running and in a tractor now.

Charlie V.

P.S. Those cranks can raise a nice blister on your hand, especially if the
grip tube does not turn freely on the crank. Been there. Just a few more
cranks and this thing might start. As a kid, I used our unstyled L as my
personal runabout on the farm. They sure were easier to get on and off
from then. I can't figure how they changed over the years to be so
difficult now.
