In our area it is quite common for fields to be planted in rows of pines 
with three planned cuttings of trees (thinning). It takes about 40-50 years 
if you leave the last cutting to grow into big trees. All the while you wait 
for land prices to go up and then sell it off after the last trees are cut 
to build houses on. During this time you get to enjoy lower property tax 
rates and you can rent the land to deer hunters for 2-3 times what a farmer 
would have paid.
