Yep that works too Paul. Just as long as the cable if free to roll as it is
wound on the drum.

I have put a swivel on mine and hook it to 15-20 lbs of weight, easier on
the hands, but either works

correction on what I said before or at least a clarification. The cable
needs to run freely on the ground as it rolls back on the drum to get the
twist out of it but it needs tension as it goes on the drum so you're going
to need to put on a heavy leather glove and let it drag through your hand as
you train it on the drum. Be careful. It would be better if you had a
tensioner built onto the winch but most don't come that way.

And until it gets 'trained', I have a helper or keep the cable in my hand as
let it out. Sometimes it takes a while before I can just let is free wheel,
so keep tension on it all the time. Quality of cable has a BIG effect on
this also.

Andy, roll all of the cable out and stretch it out straight on the ground
behind the winch and make sure all of the excess twist is out of it. Then
roll it back on allowing it do drag over the ground freely and try to train
it on the reel as you go. Then winch it down tight and let it sit for a
couple of weeks until it gets used to being on the reel. If that doesn't do
it I don't know what to tell you except try a different cable.

I put a 12K electric winch on my steam engine trailer. When there is any
slack in the line it developes a terrible birds nest on the drum. It is
impossible to hook up to the engine without having slack at some tiem. What
can I do to keep the cable wrapped tightly on the drum?
