Ben,

Our garden plot is essentially clay. When I go to plow in the spring, the
plow looks just like you would expect for something sitting outside all
year. It doesn't take much plowing before all the surfaces are nice and
shiny. I've had the same experience with the cultivator.

I've never worried about the rust too much, I just make sure that nothing
is in direct contact with the ground when I'm not using it. I usually prop
it up on a few bricks. Never developed any rust pits in any of the
surfaces.

As far as coatings, I've heard of spraying on a light coat of varnish or
shellac to ward off surface rusting. Don't know how well that would wear
off when you start to work the soil or how much the soil would stick. You
may want to consider some type of lube product in a spray can that forms a
protective covering and doesn't absorb moisture.

Another thing you can do is remove the shares and put them in a plastic
bucket that's filled with a mixture of sand and used motor oil. Push them
in and out a few times to remove any surface rust and clean them, then
just leave them there until you need them again.
