Don't forget, guys, that the susceptibility to freezing is a direct result of the specific gravity of the electrolyte.  That's why float chargers are now so popular.

A fully charged battery is comparable to having anti-freeze in your radiator.

Even in the sixties it was the popular belief here that vehicle and 
machinery batteries must be taken into the house for storage for the 
winter. It made for a lot of unnecessary work, especially as tractors 
got bigger and had 2 big batteries. Eventually I abandoned this practice 
(got lazy). Currently my biggest diesel tractor has a set of batteries 
over ten years old that have never been taken out since I installed them 
new. Apparently sitting out there in unheated storage every winter has 
not hurt them.
