Mike,
The backlight in your LCD screen is going off. There are 2 possibilities, the tiny flourescent tubes at the top and bottom of the LCD are dying, or the inverter board that supplies them with the high voltage to fire is dying. I would start with the inverter (provided the part is available) and if that doesen't fix it, you'll have to bite the bullet for the LCD. You might want to consider just replacing the laptop due to the cost of the LCD. The newer laptops are getting the LED backlights. Less expensive to manufacti=ure and there is no inverter involved. They're easier on batteries too.

Hi all,I'm curious to know if the problem I'm having sounds familiar to anyone. I have a Toshiba laptop thats about 4-5 years old. Recently the screen has been going dark randomly for no apparent reason. I can still see the screen,but its too dim to make anything out; its like someone has turned the brightness all the way off. If I reboot the computer it comes back on normally, at least for now. Thanks for any advice. Mike
