Thanks Steve. Audacity is the program I was trying to think of. Although 
it seems to me it was only a trial program that lasted a few days and 
then quit working unless you paid for it.
I think I used it to convert a few lp records but was not too impressed 
with the sound quality. Of course maybe I did not know the right settings.
