[AT] Motor challenges of the modern? variety

Grant-
Every place is different, but around here (upstate NY) you can often get a
large (over 100 HP) older farm tractor that might have a good engine for a
little as 1-2 thousand $. It might have a transmission problem, but that is
not what you care about as long as you can get it to the pump in some gear
that works. These have usually not been used hard on the PTO, just primary
tillage machines.

No Grant it was me that was not clear. I was just trying to make the point
that it takes about 2 engine HP to replace 1 electric motor HP and didn't
notice that you had already alluded to that.
I'd bet the Rockford hand clutch would bolt to the Perkins but I agree with
Ralph about the reputation of those engines. If the Rockford clutch won't
bolt up there is probably an adapter plate available or you could have one
built in a machine shop.

I suppose I was not clear on the horsepower - it is a 100hp diesel, not
electrice that I am replacing....

Grant, I'm just brain storming here but it might help. The Perkins should
have an SAE bell housing mount pattern so hooking it up to different
clutches shouldn't be a problem. You might want to look at a clutch from a
marine application. Some commercial fishing boats use a clutch with a PTO
drive for running hydraulics, winches, etc. I don't think it is the same as
a tractor PTO though. You might also find a military type truck
transmission with a PTO. Don't know if either of those would handle 100 hp
or not. I'm sure you are aware of this but if it takes a 100 hp electric
motor to run the pump, you will need about 200 engine HP to run it.

Good luck

This might be an odd subject for the ATIS list, but here goes. I am in the
process of replacing a pseudo-modern (1970s/1980s) gasoline motor on a pump
with either a natural gas or diesel one. I have been looking high and low
for a PTO gearhead on the idea of a tractor hookup but found that they are
too expensive at the $5500 range. I should mention that the class on this
pump is near 100hp if powered by a motor rather than am electric motor.
Electricity is out because of the cost of hookup (6-10,000 dollars) and the
lengthy timing to get a connection thanks to deregulation and the laying off
of the utility staff and outsourcing. Don't get me started on the bad news
there!
I see a possible Perkins 510 cubic inches Diesel V8 available without a
clutch and wonder how they might work and whether the old IH Rockford hand
clutch I have would bolt up - I doubt it. Also, I have found a Case 1370 as
a possible PTO candidate at 144HP - a 1970s tractor without AC in the cab.
     Any feedback?

p.s. The addition of two ranches this year so far has definitely NOT
decreased my work load! But my biggest non-irrigation issue is definitely
personnel, as in finding the right sales people for farmers markets and
keeping paperwork done. Sigh.
