Here's a 20 minute Canadian National Film Board documentary done in 1958 showing the day to day operation of the Canadian Pacific Railway operating during winter months in the Canadian Rockies.



If anyone has a spare 20 minutes it is well worth the viewing.

Here's a story from an old railroader, followed by the link to the National Film Board movie ... 

 

It may say "1958" in the subject line, but this is the type of railroading that stole my heart when I stepped off the westbound Super Continental in Jasper, Alberta in December of 1965.  

 

This film depicts mainline mountain railroading in CP's Mountain Territory, but CN's Mountain Territory wasn't that far north of Revelstoke.  If you look at a map and find Revelstoke, look almost directly north and find Valemount which is on CN's mainline from 'out east' to Vancouver.  Valemount is on the Albreda Sub between Jasper, Alberta and Blue River, BC.132 miles of very deep snow and long winters.  It boasts wonderful scenery amid the vast forests, high mountains and beautiful valleys.    

 

The same type of motive power and cabooses (vans) were in use on CN as is shown on CP at that time, and the same employees who lived and worked along the track.

It's a 1958 National Film Board documentary on railroaders life on the Mountain Sub.

It has some great clips of the Dispatcher, Operators, Engineers, and the various
line side men working their jobs, although they sure were not aware of the problem of smoking!
