Thanks Jim, Spencer and John. Actually, I'm not sure I have this forum
ight. I sent that email, I think, sometime last week and just got
onfirmation that it got to you last night. Also, it is obvious that you
re reading each other's responses and I am getting emails from you
ndividually. Where sure I be logged on to get all your responses?
In the meantime, I decided to do exactly what you suggested, have already
argely disassembled to the core and sandblasted the one I want to redo
with the bad engine), and sandblasted, removed and checking over the good
ngine. I just ordered seals, and will be getting hardware (nuts and bolts)
his weekend, so will start reassembly next week. I have found the retainer
lates for the rear seal are a bit warped from being torqued down too
ightly on the gasket. I'm not sure I will be able to use emery paper to
evel it out, and not sure if there is enough metal to have it milled. Both
ets from the two rear seal areas are warped...one worse than the other.
ny suggestions?
I think I WILL go with the original style tie rod ends, even though these
ave been welded. I may be able to grind down the weld beads so it is not
uite so obvious. If they really bother me later, I can always replace them
ith new.
Both grills are in pretty bad shape, so ideally I would like to replace
hat, but can't afford the $600 for a new one, so if you know of a good
ondition, "inexpensive" grill for the C123, please let me know.
I decided to not use the water pump (it was on the bad engine, anyway) and I
ill not use the starter ignition key/solenoid setup (when converted to 12v)
hat WAS on the tractor I am restoring. I like the little pull start switch
nd rod. I am leaving the 12v system, though.
I will be replacing the seals on the PTO, and checking the hydraulic screen,
eplacing those gaskets and the manifold gasket and o-rings. I think it was
im that suggested I also replace a seal? on the hydraulic pump while things
re apart. Jim, if that is correct, which seal is that? I haven't taken
he pump off, yet, but it is disconnected from the manifold, so it would be
o problem.
I will be exchanging the left final drive with the parts one, since it had
een welded at some time. At the same time, I'll replace those seals and
askets. I did see that it might take a press to get the axle out, but
fter going to the DSCF last week, I saw it done and do have access to a
ress, so we will see what happens there. If you here some loud cussing
oming from Chapel Hill, you will know what it is about!!
OK, enough! Have a good day, and I will try to figure out how to post and
ead this forum correctly.

ale,
agree with the other 2 comments you have gotten. Don't tear the second
actor apart any more than needed to get parts. You may want to finish
aring it apart after you finish the first tractor. But I'd wait on that
ve until the first is done. Too many extra parts floating around may
nfuse the issue later on. By the way, the automotive type tie rod ends
dn't get used on the Super A until well after 1948. So you may have some
rt of frankentractor there.

i all. I just had my 2 '48 Super A's trailered to the shop where I plan to
gin rebuilding them into one. Though they are both the same year, there
e some differences, such as one has the older steering rod ends, while the
her has the "automotive" style ones. One of the engines has a broken
ankshaft (at least that was the understanding when I bought it for a parts
actor), but I THINK the rest of the tractor might be the better of the two
 be the surviving tractor.
My big question is, can anyone outline an approach for beginning this
oject? In other words, how should I start it? Should I start tearing
wn BOTH tractors simultaneously, choosing the better parts from each as I
along, or should I pick which one I THINK is the better, and start
eaking it down, replacing bad parts as I come across them from the other
actor? The second engine works fine, although I will probably at least do
top overhaul while I have it apart.
I will be degreasing, sandblasting/stripping, repairing/replacing parts,
en repainting, and figure it will be several months' work, at the rate I
.
I'm sure some of you have done "2 into 1" projects before, and can at least
ve me some ideas, and help me avoid big pitfalls! Thanks, and I will
eck in tomorrow.
