Dale,
E-mails on the list go to everyone who is signed up for the list. We
see all responses. It is much like the online forums only done through
e-mail and available only t o those who are members of the list.

Thanks Jim, Spencer and John. Actually, I'm not sure I have this forum
right. I sent that email, I think, sometime last week and just got
confirmation that it got to you last night. Also, it is obvious that you
are reading each other's responses and I am getting emails from you
individually. Where sure I be logged on to get all your responses?

In the meantime, I decided to do exactly what you suggested, have already
largely disassembled to the core and sandblasted the one I want to redo
(with the bad engine), and sandblasted, removed and checking over the good
engine. I just ordered seals, and will be getting hardware (nuts and bolts)
this weekend, so will start reassembly next week. I have found the retainer
plates for the rear seal are a bit warped from being torqued down too
tightly on the gasket. I'm not sure I will be able to use emery paper to
level it out, and not sure if there is enough metal to have it milled. Both
sets from the two rear seal areas are warped...one worse than the other.
Any suggestions?

I think I WILL go with the original style tie rod ends, even though these
have been welded. I may be able to grind down the weld beads so it is not
quite so obvious. If they really bother me later, I can always replace them
with new.

Both grills are in pretty bad shape, so ideally I would like to replace
that, but can't afford the $600 for a new one, so if you know of a good
condition, "inexpensive" grill for the C123, please let me know.

I decided to not use the water pump (it was on the bad engine, anyway) and I
will not use the starter ignition key/solenoid setup (when converted to 12v)
that WAS on the tractor I am restoring. I like the little pull start switch
and rod. I am leaving the 12v system, though.

I will be replacing the seals on the PTO, and checking the hydraulic screen,
replacing those gaskets and the manifold gasket and o-rings. I think it was
Jim that suggested I also replace a seal? on the hydraulic pump while things
are apart. Jim, if that is correct, which seal is that? I haven't taken
the pump off, yet, but it is disconnected from the manifold, so it would be
no problem.

I will be exchanging the left final drive with the parts one, since it had
been welded at some time. At the same time, I'll replace those seals and
gaskets. I did see that it might take a press to get the axle out, but
after going to the DSCF last week, I saw it done and do have access to a
press, so we will see what happens there. If you here some loud cussing
coming from Chapel Hill, you will know what it is about!!

OK, enough! Have a good day, and I will try to figure out how to post and
read this forum correctly.

Dale,
agree with the other 2 comments you have gotten. Don't tear the second
ractor apart any more than needed to get parts. You may want to finish
earing it apart after you finish the first tractor. But I'd wait on that
ove until the first is done. Too many extra parts floating around may
onfuse the issue later on. By the way, the automotive type tie rod ends
idn't get used on the Super A until well after 1948. So you may have some
ort of frankentractor there.

ubject: [Farmall] 2 Super A's combined into 1 Restored tractor
Hi all. I just had my 2 '48 Super A's trailered to the shop where I plan to
egin rebuilding them into one. Though they are both the same year, there
re some differences, such as one has the older steering rod ends, while the
ther has the "automotive" style ones. One of the engines has a broken
rankshaft (at least that was the understanding when I bought it for a parts
ractor), but I THINK the rest of the tractor might be the better of the two
o be the surviving tractor.

My big question is, can anyone outline an approach for beginning this
roject? In other words, how should I start it? Should I start tearing
own BOTH tractors simultaneously, choosing the better parts from each as I
o along, or should I pick which one I THINK is the better, and start
reaking it down, replacing bad parts as I come across them from the other
ractor? The second engine works fine, although I will probably at least do
top overhaul while I have it apart.

I will be degreasing, sandblasting/stripping, repairing/replacing parts,
hen repainting, and figure it will be several months' work, at the rate I
o.

I'm sure some of you have done "2 into 1" projects before, and can at least
ive me some ideas, and help me avoid big pitfalls! Thanks, and I will
heck in tomorrow.
