Yes they can, especially if he used a cheap one. Most auto parts stores
sell a cheap coil at about $20, and a good one at about $35. Remember,
this is what the mechanic would pay, not what he would bill you. A
condenser can also cause this, in addition to a plugged vent in gas cap,
or rust getting over gas intake in tank, I think all of which have
already been mentioned. From what you have mentioned so far I would
suspect coil, I have had the same thing happen .
