I'm not sure you found the right marks. I remember the marks as notches at
the big end, not punch marks on the small end. The Farmall H online catalog
only lists the older style seat. I can't find a Super H catalog online.
The Super M catalog lists 3 springs with 3, 4 or 5 notches, for light,
medium and heavy operators, with listings like this:
SPRING, conical (4 identifying notches) (For medium weight operators)
I wouldn't be surprised if the currently available replacements don't have
any marks.
My Dad's fix for light operators was to run a chain from the middle of the
spring down to the drawbar, pulling the seat down to a reasonable position
for the light weight.

Barney,
I examined my spring, looking for punch marks like you suggested, and found
2 near the small end of the spring. So, I am thinking that I may also have
the middle spring. We could trade, but I am not sure it would do any good
for either one of us. Thanks for responding anyway.

I have one that is the latest and kind of in the middle, I'd love to have
the
stiff one and would be willing to trade. From what I have been told there is
a
marking system they used. There should be some punch marks on the coils
somewhere. One is soft, 2 is med and 3 is HD. I weigh about 280 and would
like a
stiff one.

I have a 1950 Farmall H, and the seat spring that I have is very stiff,
which
produces a stiffer ride and allows me to sit up high in the seat. I only
weigh
150 lbs. This is the standard tapered coil spring, and shock absorber for
that
year. It measures about 8 " at the top, and 2" at the bottom.
I could live with the spring that I have, but I am going to let my 9 year
old
grandson learn to drive the tractor soon, and it would be helpful for him to
sit
a little lower in the seat. I believe that IH made these springs in 3
different
compression strengths, depending upon the weight of the operator, and I
think
that I have the stiffest one. Any ideas as to where is the best source to
start
looking for a new, lighter weight seat spring? Thanks.
