I said earlier I had never seen the diamond pattern tires.  I didn't realize 
we were talking about turf tires.  I see them all the time but traction is 
not the reason for them in any direction including sideways.  Their purpose 
is floatation and, as Ken says, to reduce tearing up the ground.
