Ron I think the freezing is because it's not just oil comming out.  There is 
also some Methane comming out with it that is under extreme pressure under 
ground.  As it gets into the water it starts to expand and freezes just like 
propane freezes a carb or intake in a propane tractor.  As far as suction or 
syphon I agree with you.  Suction isn't the right term either but it's maybe 
closer than syphon.  The pressure 5000 feet down is enormous and the oil is 
lighter than water so it's going to shoot up somewhat on it's own about like 
smoke rising on a day when the atmospheric pressure is high but getting it 
to shoot up through a relatively small pipe (compared to it's length) is the 
problem when there is no way to seal it off at the bottom.   I don't know 
but I image the rig they are using is a lot like a septic tank pumper truck. 
The pipe goes down into the goo and the air is pumped out of the tank above, 
creating a negative pressure in the tank and pipe.
