Since Mattias said that the last weekend was their first days above
freezing since Dec 12 but that the ground was warm causing melting from
underneath I took that to mean that they had probably gotten their first
snows of the season before any real cold weather had set in and that this
snow then provided an insulating blanket preventing the subsequent
continuous cold from lowering the temperature of the earth underneath the
snow.  Of course, this may not be at all what happened -- maybe Mattias
can tell us -
