Hello Charlie,
	The official depth is 8' under undisturbed snow and 12' under a 
driveway or road.
	I can remember years ago that I could just drop the blade clearing snow 
and the blade would just ride on the ground. We have had snow cover 
before the ground froze in the last few years. In this case you can 
clear undisturbed snow and dig ground without thawing first.
