I agree Rupert and I should have explained better.  IF I were going to use 
air I'd fill the cyl completely full of oil and come out of the spark plug 
hole with pressure hose or pipe up above the top of the cyl.  Then I'd put a 
valve on guage and valve on the line.    There would only be a small area 
left open for air and the air would be applied slowly, building up pressure 
to a safe level and then valved off from the compressor.  Remember you can't 
compress a fluid so even with the grease gun there has to be some air, an 
expanding rubber line or constant mechanical pressure on the system all the 
time or it will do just as you said and loose it's pressure immediately.  By 
putting the air in above the oil level and keeping the volume of air low 
compared to the cylinder (oil) volume there shouldn't be any problems.  At 
least that's how I see it.
