In my Spokane garden I had access to fresh chicken manure, right out of 
the chicken into the pickup.  I would get a load in early march as soon 
as I could get near the garden.  It would then be spread as best I 
could.  Then I would get a pickup load or two of fresh cut sawdust and 
spread that over the garden.  Then it would get tilled (this was before 
I discovered raised beds) completely.  You could not really plant 
anything until the end of April or first of May so it had time to settle 
down.  I always left a small spot for any early planting such as peas.
