I've been spinning a D-14 six volt starter with a 12 V battery for years. 
I'll let you know when it hurts it.
To answer your question,  12 V starters were available for some later model 
D-10,12, and 14's.  I think the actual starter motor is the same as the B 
starter but I'm not sure of it.  Anyway a good starter shop should be able 
to build you one from stock parts.  It could be they are already available 
but I don't know where.
