Charlie, if you go to the Google main page at
www.google.com
and click on the drop box at the top left marked "More" and then
scroll down it to the link "Even more"...
Unless you have been there lately I think you might be surprised at
how many on-line services they have for free and they are windows
program compatible. I use Google  "Docs" quite a bit to write
articles. I can be working on 6 to 10 at a time and use any on-line
computer I want much as if I was using a LAN. I don't have to sync
anything since I am always working on the one central copy. Sometimes
things just don't "look" right in an article and I just let it sit and
ferment for while and check back on it making changes a little at a
time.
I don't believe I would want to keep really sensitive stuff there but
my articles go public anyway so it doesn't concern me.
I am really happy with the Google Picasa photo site.
Google's browser (Chrome) isn't bad either but I much prefer Firefox.
I'll never use MS-IE again. Never... BTW, the apple browser, Safari,
will now run on Mickey-slush and is real nice too.
Linux is actually rapidly approaching  mainstream. It is just a matter
of one of the 37,000 distributions coming to the top so they don't
overwhelm the public. My current favorite is Simply Mepis. Next is
Mandriva then Ubuntu. I see a lot of laptops coming with Linux now. Of
course you can always dual boot and keep Windows too.
