I'm guessing the female fainters are goats used for protecting livestock.
You put them in with the livestock and when a predator comes along the
goats "faint" and make easy prey compared to chasing the escaping
livestock. That's were the term "escape goat" comes from. I remember
seeing something about this on "Dirty Jobs" one day. It's amazing how the
goats just drop and stay motionless for a minute or two.
As far as the hammers, he was probably collecting them, until his wife
threatened to use one of them if he didn't get rid of them all.
