[AT] Polar Ice Caps

Well we have them down here Ralph but usually they are just on diesel
powered stuff. Gasoline will fire right off.
Most folks with diesels don't have to use them except on the coldest of days
or when the engine is getting well worn.

The one on my old Detroit went into a hole where there was a block off plate
similar to the block off plates for engines that don't have a mechanical
fuel pump. The difference being that it went into the water jacket rather
than the base.

Charlie
I was just assuming that everyone knows about block heaters but of course in
the south country I guess they are a bit rare. Most block heaters that I am
familiar with are the frost plug type. Just remove a frost plug and insert
the block heater. Tighten it up, attach cord and plug in. I installed two ,
one on each side in the 304 v8 in my IH Loadstar. That way if it needs a
fast warm up I plug in both cords. Otherwise, for overnight I will just plug
in one side.
On the older tractors I have the external 1500 watt circulating heaters.
They are plumbed into the system through the engine block drain and then
into a fitting on the upper water manifold. After an hour or so with one of
those plugged in the temperature gauge on the tractor will be rising into
the green and the block will be warm. One turn of the starter and the
Perkins diesel is running. Pretty important when the cows are waiting on
their hay. :-)

Back in the mid 70's I had a 60's model GMC cabover truck (road tractor)
with an 8 V 71 Detroit diesel. I put a block heater in it that looked
exactly like a small water heater element. It was made for the engine and
bolted onto the block after removing a block off plate.

At night I would plug it in, hook up a trickle charger to the 8D batteries
and leave the cab heater fan turned on low. In the morning the old Detroit
would fire in 4 or 5 revolutions and the cab would be a toasty 50 degrees or
so. Sure beat jumper cables in 15 degree weather at 4 AM. Sorry we don't
know about those minus numbers here yet but if old Al keeps selling carbon
credits I fear it's comming our way.

Thanks, Charlie. I may just do that tomorrow night. Battery in my Baja still
seems to have plenty of cranking power, but it's now approaching five years
old. And when they do go, it's usually some morning when it's -20 or colder.

I used to put one under the hood of my '47 Ford on really cold nights, Bob.
I would place it near the radiator with the beam on the firewall, near the
battery. By morning, the snow would be gone from the ground under the motor
and the old 6 volt would crank the flat head V-8 like a summer day. My
theory was that the lamp would run for less than 25 cents a night. Missing
a couple of hours of work because the car did not start would cost quite a
bit more, not to mention the embarrassment of being late..
