I wonder if Johnson grass is the same as what we call "twitch grass" or 
"quackgrass" here? I think it is pretty much the reason glyphosate 
herbicides were invented. Up til then the only option we had to kill this 
stubborn grass was heavy and frequent tillage. Not a good thing for soil 
erosion. Now a litre an acre of glyphosate (a.k.a. roundup) will kill as 
good or better than multiple tillage passes.
Luckily twitch grass also makes pretty fair hay if cut early and I have cut 
a few patches this year in ditches, old yards, etc. and baled it for winter 
feed.
