You probably know that cast iron shrinks quite a lot as it cools, so  
you need to make your pattern just that much bigger if dimensions are  
important.  They likely still do make steel rulers that are calibrated  
for this purpose.

A 12-inch rule for this use is nearly a quarter inch longer than 12  
inches.  This can certainly throw you off if you grab one unawares and  
use it for normal measuring.
