Roy, don't let these guys pull your leg too hard.  Dean is a JD expert. 
Every JD ever built up until ....mmmmm .... I guess the mid 60's or so was a 
two cyl. and most of them were of horizontal design.  A few like the M and 
40 were vertical engines but still 2 cyl.

That is a flywheel over on the left had side.  If it was an A or GP  or most 
of the others you use that to start the tractor.   Spin it by hand.
