It is unrelated to your problem but I seem to recall that it is
possible to install the venturi upside down in those. If so the proper
direction is with the small hole down and the big hole end up. Just
something to think about as you put it back together.
Those float valves (on about all such carbs) can turn pesky at times.
Sometimes even a new one. I have had them that would be prone to leak
doing barnyard chores but straighten out by themselves when taken to
the field and worked a few hours.
The float itself must have zero binding at the hing pin. The float
doesn't have much force and will barely support itself let alone
overcome any binding. If one gets a pinhole in it and has fuel in it
you can usually find the pinhole (fuel inside of the float indicates a
pinhole) by holding it down in a container of hot water. It will
bubble at the hole as the water heats the air inside of it. It is
often possible to repair the hole by careful cleaning, fluxing and
soldering but it is critical to not apply too much solder. A glob one
half the size of a BB is many times too much. The added weight is too
much for the float to lift and still close the valve properly. Think
like a watchmaker. :-)
As someone said, there is only a few things to go wrong with one of these carbs.
It is hardly "original" but over the years I have become fond of
adding an in-line fuel filter between the sediment bowl and the carb.
BTW, don't forget to remove and clean the little inlet screen where
the fuel line enters the carb. Also you can do yourself a big favor by
filling the tank using a funnel with a good screen. I sometimes find
an awfully lot of crud on the screen that obviously came from the
filling station since the can and the funnel were both clean to start
with.
