Maybe the climate was just enough different to stop the bugs and beetles.

Grandpa always sold in the Old Belt market in Winston-Salem which (as I
remember) didn't open until after the world series.
I remember him telling of going to market with a horse drawn wagon (a 
two day trip).  Today I can be at the same spot in about 30 minutes but 
it isn't a tobacco warehouse these days.
