While you are waiting, get online and find yourself a manual- they are cheap
advice.

Take off the distributor cap and clean the points with a piece of sandpaper
and blow out the dust. Reset the point gap at .020 when the points are at
their widest point.

Take out your plugs and clean and gap them if necessary- their condition
will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine.

If you do these things and have a cooperative buddy with another tractor or
truck you should be able to pull start it. You mentioned poor brakes- if you
ull start it you may want to use a loooong chain or at least a chain through
a piece of pipe to keep you from hitting the pull vehicle.
