During WW-II when the Americans were beginning to make and use the  
P-51 Mustang, there was an engineering conference with the Rolls Royce  
engine makers and the American (Army) aviators.  The Army wanted a  
switch and valve to bypass the oil filter in case contamination was  
plugging up the filter.  The Rolls Royce folks adamantly refused,  
saying that no Rolls Royce engine should ever get unfiltered oil!
