Dave and others, I found a post by Chris Britton (Soundguy) on the YT forum
mentioning he'd had his NAA starter rebuilt so I emailed him direct and got
the correct answer.

It isn't the answer I'd hoped for, but it is correct. In a nutshell if you
have the original cartridge filter housing you will need to drain the oil
and remove the housing, or at minimum remove the housing and filter.

Here is our correspondence:

Hi I've seen your posts on atis and on the yesterdays tractors site,
specifically you posted on yt that you'd had your NAA starter rebuilt.

Did you have to remove the oil filter in order to withdraw the starter
straight forward? I have my starter loosened, but the oil filter housing
requires me to pull the starter at a slight angle, and the bendix drive
snags on the flywheel and won't come out.

Any tips appreciated- If I have to drain the oil, then so be it, but I hate
to drain all that oil if there is some other trick to getting the drive out.

Thanks,
Warren Smith

I have the spin on oil fitler on my NAA.. but it's close either way. And
no.. I didn't pull my filter to do it. besides.. pulling it straight back
isn't the easy way to get it out.. Angle the aft/external starter end
towards the block and down, then pull out.. this will angle the drive gear
end out and away from the flywheel at about the 2'oclock position.. ( if
looking into the hole where the starter will come out from )..this is where
it has the maximum amount of clearance of the drive gear to the flywheel.

Thanks so much for the reply! I'll try that. It seems it was hitting one of
the supsension members going that way but I may be able to jack up that side
to drop the suspension member for clearance.

I knew there had to be some way to get that thing off w/out draining the
crankcase.

It should not hit the radius rod.. the end of the starter should be angled
down and toward the ENGINE.. the piece that is insid ethe trans bellhousing
it what is aimed up and out at 2'oclock. I doubt the steering arm will be
in the way either.. but it can be moved easilly.

No jacking is needed.. this thing slips right out when you hold your mouth
right. once you pop it out you will see what I mean.. think of the ring
gear on the flywheel.. it's a circle.. and the trans bellhousing is kinda
squarish witht he starter setting near a corner of that square, to drive the
ring gear.. the drive gear sets behind/aft of the ring gear, so you pull out
a few inches once the botls are out, and then you have to angle the driver
gear end a little away and out to get it to clear.. the 2'oclock is the
position of the most clearance... the external part of the starter will be
touching the engine block almost, and angled down, thus going under the oil
filter, and really no where near the radius rod / steering arm.

Yeah I understood your instructions perfectly the first time. The radius rod
interferes if you angle straight down with the starter motor. Unfortunately,
the oil filter housing interferes with using your procedure.

I have a hard time believing Ford made a poor farmer drain the oil to change
the starter, but that's the way it is. I bought a new filter and oil this
afternoon, just in case.

Looks like I'll drain the oil and take the starter to be rebuilt tomorrow.

I'm going to post your helpful email on ATIS, as no one seemed to know the
answer there. Your answer is correct, luckily for you, you have the spin-on
adaptor.

Again, thanks

Warren
