A pitman mower had a setup like a crankshaft and connecting rod.  The connecting rod connects to the sickle and is usually wood with metal ends.  The mower will self distruct if the bar is raised above it's working angle, probably less than 45 degrees.  A balanced head mower would mow at 90 degrees if the lift mechanism would hold it there (like the side mount highway mowers).  A balanced head mower has a wobble box like a mo-co.  
The pitman is usually broken at least a few times each season also :-)
