The technology has changed, Mattias. As turntables wear out, break parts, and get replaced with units that no longer have a turntable with them, the only way to hear those memorable recordings is to make a copy of them in a newer media. I started with audio cassettes, but switched out of that almost immediately and got into CD's. But this was before MP3. If I was doing it today, I probably would use the MP3 format.

I'm doing the same sort of thing with tractor documentation and literature. I'm working with a brand that is no longer made, so the literature is getting harder to come by as the collectors are increasing. I've been turning out a CD full of photos, sales brochures, owner's manuals, repair instructions, etc, at approximately one per year for the last four or five years. I'm putting them in searchable PDF format so they can be searched without actually generating an index to the materials.

As with all archival activities in this electronic age, this conversion is NOT the end. When the CD format disappears (just like the LP record) a new format will have to be used and the material on the previous format will have to migrate to the new "standard". So even though all this thread about old audio records may seem to be way off topic, it really isn't -- we have the same problem in preserving the literature for our old tractors.

As a side comment, the digital version of tractor literature has some advantages that the original didn't have -- it's infinitely searchable. The orginal materials weren't.

Larry
