I use regular oil usually then spin the engine with starter but no plugs
in it (so it spins faster with no compression).  Filling new oil filter
with oil if possible helps also.  Usually can get a reading on the
pressure gage this way; know it has at least some circulation before
putting plugs in & starting it.

Depends on the engine as to what I use but generally the least common
denominator is the engine lubricant. I like to use things like the
molybdenum disulfide on camshafts (designed for that; new cam lube is
usually in the cam kit) and whatever else is recommended. The main
thing is to keep the engine lubricated until the main engine lube
system comes up... after that it will wash down whatever is in there.
Dad used to use motor honey since it's a really sticky lubricant but
modern lubricants are a great improvement over those of old. The main
thing is to get it lubed and NOT run it dry, in my opinion. After
that, it's going to vary from person to person and engine to engine in
many cases.
