He has the fireplace set up on a thremostat and it cycles on an off just like a furnace.  Dad is very happy with the cost as well.  They had a problem with soot stains once.  It turned out that the fake logs had shifted and were blocking the flame where they shoudn't be.  The logs were repositioned and problem solved.  They have a CO detector and it never shows any sign of CO in the house.
