[AT] Cleaning a serial number plate

Has anyone ever tried brake fluid?  We all know it eats
paint, and I don't think it'll harm the aluminum S/N plate
(lots of examples of aluminum parts in brake systems). 
Disclaimer:  I've never tried it personally.
