That is a half truth - it cannot be shipped in multi-use pipes. It ships
just fine in a dedicated pipe, but they only build dedicated pipes when they
have a contract to ship something in that pipe for 20 years. Of course all
the single use pipelines in the country are busying shipping whatever in that
pipe. The multi-use pipes could find room to ship all the ethanol you would
want, but you can't put ethanol in them.
The pipeline companies are considering building an ethanol pipe from IL to
someplace on the east coast, but they want to make sure the cost will be paid
off in the long run.
Personally I'm watching a lot of alternative fuels. I keep hoping the algae
oil market takes off - they could take unused desert and grown enough fuel
for the US at $1.50/gallon. However they have problems to solve yet. (How
do you grow a water based plant in the desert? There are answers - they
have ideas but it will take time to see if they work)
