As George Willer stated it can be a real pain.  If you are just  digging 
trenches it's probably not a big issue.
If you are digging a large  hole for a tank, or just digging deep it can be a 
real pain.  Having enough  room to safely place the spoils can require 
staging or moving the spoils several  times.  I have 2, 580 Case backhoes and need 
to find an equivalent size  excavator.  If I had an excavator, I would keep 1, 
580 Case, and with the  excavator I would be more efficient in many of the 
jobs I  do.
