It all goes back to how the officer feels on any given day

If your not hauling for money, its an RV or farm related (with a limit how
many miles your are hauling from the farm) or a fire truck, most states exempt
the requirement. Many motor homes exceed 26,001 pounds. I have a neighbor
who has a Kenworth and trailer/camper that weighs in at about 56,000. He has a
sign which reads "not for hire" and does not have a CDL. You may have to
dig a bit in the regulations to find the exceptions.
