Charlie, my brother had the gas heater in his VW beetle and it was a late
sixties model. The original hot air vents from the air cooled engine gave a
fair heat but when it got really cold even the gas heater was barely enough
to keep the windows frost free enough to drive.

If I remember correctly, when the Corvair hit the street in 1960, it was
equipped with a gasoline heater due to no hot water with an air cooled rear
engine. One of the early GM recalls was a change of the jets to correct fuel
flow.
