Herb,  brush hogs are the worst thing I know for loosing shaft seals.  If 
you ever hit a piece of wire with the blades it will most likely wind up 
wrapped around the shaft and the end of it will cut the seal out.  If you 
are working on the cutter it might pay to go ahead and replace the seal.  If 
you're running it the grease as Cecil suggested is a good solution.  I'm 
running my Woods 72-3 on grease now.  I hope to get it taken apart and the 
seal replaced soon but I suspect I could run it from now on with the grease 
with no problems.
