I've used a similar method on my Farm King rotary mower gearbox. It has a
slight seal leak around the output shaft. I always used #90 gear oil. I have
replaced the level plug with a grease gun fitting as it had the same thread.
That makes it simple to pump some grease into the gearbox once in a while
just to make sure there is lubrication if I happen to run the gearbox low on
oil. Its working well so far.
