John, as far as Hawaii goes, every island is completely different. The big
island, Hawaii, is very remote. Even the two major towns, Kona and Hilo,
are relatively small.
There is a lot to do there and the volcano is flowing full tilt right now.
The south end of Maui in the Hana area is remote. It takes all day to drive
to Hana and back from anywhere on the island because it is a narrow,
winding, switch back mountain road with spectacular views. There are cattle
ranches there and on the north end of the big island. It is very strange to
see cows and horses grazing in overgrown pastures overlooking the vastness
of the Pacific ocean. The island of Kawaii has no big cities like Honolulu.
It is slow paced and if you drive all the way around the south end and as
far to the west as the road goes you will think you are at the end of the
world. I actuall found a tobacco farm in that area. Even Oahu, where
Honolulu is, is remote over on the west coast.

As far as Australia and New Zealand I can only hope I make it there some
day. If you carefully select your flights and airlines you can break that
trip up with a layover in Hawaii or Tahiti or maybe even Midway Island.
