John,
I'd have to throw my vote to Germany. Ever since I started working as a
contractor to the Air Force I've been trying to get a business trip over
there. That is the home of my ancestors on both sides of my family and I've
wanted to go there for as long as I can remember. I finally did get to go -
twice in the last year - and I was not disappointed.
The countryside is beautiful and the people are friendly. It's no wonder
the German immigrants to the US chose the farmland of the mid-atlantic
states because the similarity is amazing. Anyway, if the people know you
are American, they will try and speak English to you. I think I must look
too german because they always seemed to try and speak german to me first,
while trying to speak English to my coworker that was with me. :)
Anyway, if you want to see them, I have the pictures I took on my first trip
last November at my online photo album at

Another place I really enjoyed when I went more than 15 years ago was Spain.
I spent most of my 2 weeks there on the southern coast with a family who's
son I hosted as an exchange student the year before. Again, the people were
really friendly and tried their hardest to speak english when my spanish
failed me.

I know, this is way off topic but couldn't think of a better bunch of men to
ask. If a guy and his wife want to experience a really special country
outside North America (while they can still get around!)--where would be
some good places based on your fortunate experiences? ....where friendly
folks speak a little English, don't blow people up, and have good food.
Best time we've had so far is a 10-day trip through Arizona. I was looking
at some fantastic country in Australia on Google Earth, but not sure I could
survive 18 hours over the ocean--or figure out where and how to go once
there. Went to Hawaii several years ago which was a great
experience--although a
little "civilized." Holler if you have any ideas. Maybe I could
call this a little "on topic" by looking for old tractors and engines along
the way. In Hawaii I did take a close look and photos of an
ancient lawn mower powered by an old hit'n miss engine. John
